Introduction to Embedded Systems
What is an Embedded System?
An embedded system is a computer system—a combination of a computer processor, computer memory, and input/output peripheral devices—that has a dedicated function within a larger mechanical or electronic system.
Unlike general-purpose computers like smartphones or laptops that run many unpredictable applications, embedded systems perform real-time computing for a single specialized task.
Key Components & Applications
Embedded systems are everywhere around us. They consist of a microcontroller or microprocessor, sensors to read input from the environment, and actuators to produce output.
Common everyday examples include automotive anti-lock braking systems (ABS), smart thermostats, medical monitors, digital watches, and industrial robotics.
